What is that SBS Service Pack level?

If ever you come into examining the question of what is the current Service Pack level of an SBS machine, there is a way to do this authoritatively.  The winversion is not the same thing as the SBS version.  So instead to determine the SBS Service Pack level look to two things.

  1. a registry key
  2. a setup.exe file

The registry key below if containing the key “servicepack” and a value of 1 indicates SBS SP1 is installed:

the properties sheet version information of “C:\Program Files\Microsoft Integration\Windows Small Business Server 2003\setup.exe” shows:

  • file version 5.2.2651.0 – pre SBS SP1
  • file version 5.2.2893.0 – post SBS SP1 (its installed)

Indicates pre-SP1 version
