RWA connections from XP for SBS 2011, WHS 2011, SBSE 2011, WESS 2011

There is an issue when attempting remote connections from Windows XP SP3 through the latest greatest Microsoft OS suite for Small Business that is based on Windows 2008 R2 and the correlating Remote Gateway implementation. You need to install two things to make this work:

Here are the links:
· http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=20609 – XP RDP 7.0 client – doesn’t require restart
· http://support.microsoft.com/kb/951608 – Microsoft FixIT – repairs Credential Security Support Provider (CredSSP) Service in XP – requires a restart

**ref** SBS 2011 release documentation which covers the second linked fix above and other possible remote connection issues:

Post SBS 2008 migration and now need data from SBS 2003 NTBackup media – what to do now?

If you find that there is missing information after the migration has completed (or someone in organization suspects this) then you need to access your NTBackup created media and potentially recover data.  But Windows Server 2008 no longer has NTbackup; Vista omitted the same thing.

What to do?  Download the above nifty utility or go to a Windows 2003 Server or XP workstation you still have access to.  With the utility you can keep it all in house at the business network which keeps thing simple.

KISS is a DU-IT best practice.

The Elephant is in The Room – Reflections on Finding Answers to Difficult Technology Questions

Technology may seem imposing but a lot of troubleshooting involves simple things such as “asking for help” aka Google FU and listening to the directions aka reading. Although syntax and jargon can be a difficult road block at times even then you can search your way through the speech impediment. There is usually someone out there on the web who has written in clear language or you can cross reference terminology with tools such as Wikipedia or posts in forums.  Follow your intuition and intellectual curiosity but don’t stray too far from your original purpose. Consider yourself Indiana Jones looking for a lost Ark or some such; just remember when to start running from the boulder and blow darts.
